If the “Soul” could be a symbol in the birth chart perhaps it is best thought of as the invisible “space” in the center of the circular chart. The circular glyph for the Sun, with the dot in the middle of the circle, represents this idea nicely. But the chart as a whole conveys the same imagery, perhaps more accurately. We are the experience of being a “center” within a periphery of body, relationship, family, community, earth, cosmos. Keeping it all balanced is one of our major challenges in life.
The zodiac reveals itself as a perfect periphery surrounding this ideal center. But, all of our birth charts display planets within the zodiac that are anything but balanced around center. And these placements condition the beginning of our life. We are each born with an opportunity to bring humanity a bit more towards true center. Innovation, evolution, always starts with one.
Consider the Nodes of the Moon. We easily identify with the archetypes associated with our South Node of the Moon and we tend to feel alienated from those traits associated with the North Node. We are off center in this regard. As a soul, we will be at ease, integrated, even joyous- as we grow to center ourselves in the middle of the mature and loving manifestations of both sides of that polarity.
Center is an ideal. It shares meaning with peace, joy, tolerance of diversity. Getting there is like learning to balance on two legs for the first time. We’ve got it! And then we don’t want it… we start walking! And its far more complicated than that.
When we are very young in particular, but often well into adulthood, the symbols of astrology can signify other people in our life who are influencing our experience of self. And after we have developed our Ego a bit, we are free to explore all of the archetypes of our birth chart, as our own. There is nothing but our own personal experience of choice, that prevents us from developing the mature and loving characteristics of our human nature at any time in our lives. Remember, the balanced zodiac surrounds true center.
Life will remind us of the areas where we are off center a bit. The transiting planets and progressing cycles point us to the specific archetypes and patterns of our karmic past that are ripe for interaction and evolutionary growth. The slower moving cycles reveal this truth to us with obvious force. Our clients benefit from the context and reassurance that we can offer them, when they come to see us. The demands of these passages are far less stressful if we have have been working to embrace the integration of the zodiac mandala as a whole.
Because the karma of our birth is always imbalanced, we may grow up learning to embrace the truth of our “off” centeredness. We can find “balance” there, but it’s tiring to hold it. Many of us are holding a precarious balance in our lives which is anything by “ease”-y. And in defending it, we risk becoming entrenched in righteousness; and intolerant of other’s “wrong”. We suffer. We become intolerable to ourselves and we become intolerable to others.
The solution involves a willingness to identify with the dimensions of our own nature that we continued to alienate; to shift our own Point of Center back towards the center of the abstract mandala we call the zodiac. The zodiac itself is symbolic of the circle of life. We want to become centered within life itself.
“Soul Point Astrology” introduces our community to two additional karmic rhythms within our nature. The Lunation Point and the Life Axis are the products of my thirty-five years of astrological inquiry. I have no doubt they can help us recognize the archetypes at play in our lives at any given time. You may also use Your Birth Chart in order to explore these cycles for any charts of your choosing.
